Garage is an open-source, self-hosted, S3-compatible object storage service designed for data redundancy across multiple nodes. It is lightweight and efficient, requiring only a single binary for deployment, making it fast to set up and safe to operate. The software can run on various types of hardware, including commodity servers, virtual machines, and bare metal, without the need for high-spec servers or a dedicated backbone. It is highly resilient to network failures, latency, and disk failures, and can be deployed across multiple datacenters over the Internet.
Garage's design focuses on keeping system requirements low, supporting any x86_64 CPU from the last 10 years, ARMv7 or ARMv8, with 1 GB of RAM, at least 16 GB of disk space, and a network latency of 200 ms or less with a bandwidth of 50 Mbps or more. It is compatible with existing S3 clients, allowing users to integrate it easily into their current infrastructure.
The product leverages insights from significant research in distributed systems, including Amazon's Dynamo, Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types, and Maglev. Although it offers robust features, users must execute cluster operations carefully to avoid inconsistent states, and some may find S3 clients overly complex for simple operations.
Garage has received funding from NGI POINTER and NLnet / NGI0 Entrust, supported by the European Union's Horizon 2021 research and innovation program.
